Google Hangout upgraded into a messenger by itself

Google has recently upgraded it's Hangout feature. You can now see a list of friends who you were hanging out with in the place of your old Gmail chat.

Where did my Gmail Chat friend list go?

While you are viewing your Hangout list of friends you will not be able to see your gmail chat friends who are currently online.
You can put your pointer on the icon below the list to see if you are viewing your friends whom you hung out with.
